Song information
In 1973 Ron Carter issued an album titled “All Blues” with the title track being his version of the Miles Davis’ composition. I owned this album but the track I kept on playing was “117 Special” an original composition by Carter.

For me, the essence of this track is the 12 bar Blues theme at the very beginning. The rest of the track is mostly solos over the unusual chord progression.

This version is based on my transcription of the theme and is voiced with muted trumpet and flute rather than the tenor sax of the original. I have also increased the tempo from 82 bpm to 92 bpm and scored in 3 verses of solos.

The score for the lead has been posted on MuseScore

Oh, I like this. I like your choice of soloinstruments. Very well played.

Bass is too hot! Digging the instrumentation. Nice modeling and playing on the trumpet! Keys support nicely. Flute modeling/playing is solid too. What modeler are you using? Whenever the snare made itself known, I found myself wanting more snare. I feel like the energy of this track wants a snare! Enjoyed it, nice song.

Wow, sounds great at the first note. The trumpet and flute soli are great.

Thanks Thierry and Kenneth for your comments and thanks Moses for your analysis. I really appreciate constructive comments and I am very happy to share details of my work flow. Regarding the bass I did do a last minute EQ boost for the mix, maybe too much. I also tried electric bass but as the track is a homage to Ron Carter I stuck with Acoustic. The drums could always do with more work. The original recording is at a much slower speed and Billy Cobham starts using all the tricks of the trade to try and inject some life into the track. By taking up the tempo I was able to do a simpler drum track but it still needs more energy. The instruments are all Roland Supernatural voices from an Integra 7.
