This song grew from a pedal point exercise (comparing the same note to different notes). I was practising my trumpet one day and accidentally came up with this pattern that seems to fold back on itself, both melodically and rhythmically, by alternating the pedal with the syncopation. I ended up trying to figure the sequence out to its logical conclusion and this song was the result. I’ve tried to give it a Cuban flavour here. The introduction is a repeated clave figure which doubles as an interlude that can come between soloists and the recapitulation (head out). The song form is AABA with a contrasting bop inspired bridge. Once I’d charted it out I discovered, with much encouragement from my friends, that it’s really fun to play and solo over . . .

I love this piece of music. Lovely trumpet playing. I love the layering with the muted trumpet. I love latin jazz. This is the kind of music that introduced me to jazz 30 years ago. Lovely work. Sorry for the late listen. My work week has been crazy - no time to listen to anything. I am glad I caught up on this one because it is a real gem.
