Song information
In 2009 Stan posted one of his compositions titled “Only A Rose” with vocals by Joanne McCormick. The track had a few flaws but the vocalist could not be traced to do another take. At the time I offered to repair and repost the track but the result did not really improve things. Moving on to the present, I am now able to separate the vocals completely from the backing and then add new instrumentation. Here is the result, more of a restoration than a remix.

Words and Music – Stan Loh
Vocals – Joanne McCormick
Additional instrumentation and mix – Roger Foster

Lyrics
Only a rose, only a Rose
Can fulfill your restless heart do you suppose?
When will wandering ways give in to heaven
And the drifting soul be satisfied
Give it up! Give it up! You butterfly
Surrender your black book to some other guy

Only a rose will find a way
She will sing a thousand times on preacher’s day
She will beg for guidance from the book of dawn
But you smile and fend her off with spiny thorns
Settle down! Settle down! Unbuckle your heart
And demolish your chilled facade

Only a rose only a rose
Can reveal the core of your special pose
‘Cause the blood you draw is crimson red
And the scar that’s left is stone cold dead
Give it up! Give it up! You cry out loud
You don’t want to be told what love’s about

Oooppsss I missed this! Sorry Roger! You have done a wonderful job! I first posted this on the Muse's Muse site. There they had a monthly competition, and even with my poor backing, Joanne carried the song to #1 one month. It came in 4th in the Annual competition. Next I sent the song to my schoolmate Pheng who was the head of EMI in Malaysia. She sent it to EMI Australia, then it made its way to EMI London! There they complained that my lyric wasn't up to snuff! I volunteered to re-write...but for a long time I heard notheing from them...guess it died on the vine! But the satisfaction is it went as high up to the VP level (mostly due to Pheng's influence!). Thanks Roger for waking up this song! You've now made it more memorable for me!

This beautiful song is a gem. For me, the clever use of diminished chords gives it a lift and is the key to its appeal. Great song-writing, Stan.
