After, the "Happy assembly of peasants" of the previous movement, the sky is getting dark and announces this movement, entitled “Thunder - Storm”, which is the most agitated of the symphony. Listen to the first rumblings heard from the cellos and double basses while the second violins imitate the first drops of rain.
After a sudden crescendo, here is the storm that breaks violently, accentuated by great rolls of timpani (silent until now). The storm calms down for a few moments before the rain returns, while a new crescendo brings a second storm even more violent.
At the end of the movement, the storm gradually moves away to give way to good weather and the sweetness of the pastoral song of the last movement.
Don't forget the 3 last movements are linked to each other so intro and end are quite abrupt.
