Hi! It's been a minute...

Here's something original for a change. It's derived from math, and machinery, and it just happened to be musically catchy, but...

This is some audio I made to go onto the animation of an Absolute Rotary Encoder, a device used to turn switches on and off in a way that no two switches change state at the same time, and that reading the state of all switches indicates an unique spot in the encoder's rotation.

One example of where it's used is in the old crunchy washing machine knobs, so the washer's circuits know exactly what program the dial is pointing to, and that we don't have the machine move from Spin to Agitate in one click, due to a sticking switch.

Despite it's programmatic and non-repetative nature, Gray Code, aka Reflected Binary Code
seems to sound ... interesting.... when represented by audio.

In this case, I used 9 low notes to represent rings transitioning from On to Off, and notes one octave higher for the same rings transitioning from Off to On.

I believe I used C,D,Eb,E,F,G,A,Bb,B here.

There's another version on my Youtube channel that uses Chimes and Xylophones, and other instruments, but this piano-only version sounds decent too.

As an electrical engineer that has used gray coded devices this is so absolutely cool! And surprisingly musical.
