Is the world speeding up
or perhaps I’m slowing down,
avoiding the spin
of this merry-go-round. 

Everyone’s eyes 
darting back and forth,
like pinballs between flippers,
with attention so short.

I want to sit with you
to see if your nuance is true, 
but it’s hard to connect,
like a bad rotary line
a sizzle of syllables
on a call with a dime.

I can’t keep up 
with kids going by, 
zigging in and out 
probably high
while they move,
on speed 78,
and me at 33,

I have to remember 
I was one of them
young and free, 
dawn winking 
its morning eye at me.

Barstool kids
always out and about 
looking for thrills, pills,
while they shout
at me to get out of the way,

I remember when I had my day
as I sit on the sidelines, 
enjoying the breeze. 
It’s the little things now 
that now give me peace.

Is the world speeding up?
Is it simply passing me by?
