Song information
Alas! Here it is… another one of those annoying little “cosmic” ditties that I occasionally write.

Throughout December my songs will have a spiritual/philosophical theme.

This was written around the same time, and in much the same spirit, as Sphinx and Lethe (The Myth Of Er).

Mastered in 2024 by Tom Hellsten @ TSTStudios. Many thanks Tom!

Be well friends!

Lyrics
THE CRUCIBLE

I
The ripples you make in the waters of time,
they intermingle and combine with mine.
Together they form an irresistible tide,
that carries us along on our Valkyrie ride.

Chorus:
However long it takes to learn,
the cold will numb and the fire will burn,
but in the end we'll all return
to the Power
behind the crucible.

II
Each one a diamond-in-the-rough.
Each a stone to be polished and cut.
The Jeweler forms us
with a sure and steady hand,
as we travel in this cosmic caravan.

III
God help the materialist,
whose delusion is his bliss.
Nothing he was taught could prepare him for this:
HE'S NOT ALONE...
in the crucible.

Chorus:
However long it takes to learn,
the cold will numb and the fire will burn,
but in the end we'll all return
to the Power
behind the crucible.

IV
So shake your rattle!
Throw the I-Ching!
Trust in your doctrines...
dance...and sing;
then perhaps your offering
may be accepted
by the Power
behind the crucible.

Wonderful acoustic work on this one, and some tasty electric portions as well. The lyrics and overall feel are very spiritual and profound. What does it all mean? I'm not sure, but surely music has to be a central part of "it" :)

Don this is actually a very old song. I only remixed it and had it mastered a few months ago, and it's been waiting on deck since. Lots of oldies yet to post. I haven't recorded much of late due to time constraints and my gimpy left hand.
Glad you enjoyed it brother!

"What does it all mean?" No dogmatic answers coming from me I'm afraid! The more I learn the more I realize I don't know.
Thanks for the lovely comment friend!

Thanks for listening and commenting Al. Glad you enjoyed this weird little ditty.
While it IS about truth, it is at the same time a finger in the face of every species of fundamentalism, whether sacred or secular. We are all being schooled, are we not?

Fantastic song. So much depth in lyrics and drama in the music playing. Great

"Lethe" means forgetfulness. It's the name of a river in the afterlife in Plato's myth of Er, You'll find it near the end of The Republic. The similarity between this song and my re-telling of "Lethe (The Myth Of Er)" is that both songs are rather esoteric.
Glad you like this one friend!

Thanks Thierry. I hope my December offerings are well received.
Spiritual themes are not everyone's cup of tea, but the Advent/Christmas season is my favorite for a variety of reasons. I'll take my chances!
Glad you enjoyed this "unusual song" my friend!

Thanks Ray. This is one of those songs where---once I laid down the guitar arrangement---the lyrics came in just a few minutes. I LOVE when that happens!

Incredible Creativity!!!! No matter when you did what, this is so Masterful by you. I find it is  o hard to compose a song, melosy and lyrics, that captures the mood of this Holiday season and you do it effortlessly!!!

However, "effortlessly" may be a bit of an exaggeration. LOL...

Pretty cool lyrics, and the acoustic guitar fingerpicking is really cool. Overall, the song is done really well. The way the tune builds is really cool too.

Fits nicely into your cannon of cosmic ditties. Not in the least annoying, quite the opposite Mike. Plenty of food for thought as it builds up to a dramatic Ennio Morricone guitar twanging finale. Love it.

Thanks Mark.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I had been listen to Leonard Cohen's early "Songs Of Love And Hate" album, and my guitar picking was inspired by his playing thereon.
