In essence, the "Desiderata" is a gentle, wise, and compassionate manual for navigating life's challenges with grace, integrity, and a quiet hope. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the universal and timeless nature of its advice.
“The Impossible Dream (The Quest)", written by Mitch Leigh (music) and Joe Darion (lyrics) in ??, is the defining song from the 1965 Broadway musical "Man of La Mancha," which is based on the life and adventures of Don Quixote from the classic novel by Miguel de Cervantes. The song is an idealistic anthem about unwavering commitment to a noble cause, no matter how difficult or hopeless it may seem. It articulates the core philosophy of the character Don Quixote, who chooses to live by a chivalric code in a cynical and unheroic world.
Dr. Li, my mentor, asked me to write a song that embodied the two great works. This is the result. It uses their influences to explore a universal theme - our struggle to maintain hope and self-belief in a world designed to breed cynicism. It starts with internal questioning and doubt. Then moves through the painful cost of seeking peace, and finds a moment of transcendent, and next answers its own questions with action and confidence in the second verse and pre-chorus. It ends by staring directly at the central conflict one last time, but now from a place of greater strength.
