I know it's been suggested before but in the sea of new forum threads I sort of lost it..
I can't emphasise enough how important I feel it can be to add a feature where we can leave comments on the comments. It would make thanking, instigate collaborations, and discussing on songs so much more easier. And I like to believe there are more good reasons to do so... Please add your thoughts on why this could be a great feature. Also add your thoughts if you think this is not a good idea.
At the moment, since I love to thank everyone personally, I see the comment section on my songs fill up with more comments by me than by others.
I think it's a good idea. I like very much to publicly engage commenters without resorting to the Message feature every time.
As things now stand, when I do it shows up as another play which gives a false impression.
Also the longer the list of comments become the more we need to scroll up and down to see what someone said as we reply.
Now with just 3 comments, no problem. But obviously when comments rise the lack of commenting on comments becomes tedious and impractical, imo.
We already add this feature on iComp in the past and I have already requested that. Just the ability to reply to comments with a "@toveco" (if Tom has left a comment) and then toveco receives an email telling him he has got a reply on his comment. That would be great. Currently we cannot reply to comments and it's a lack. Please !!!!!
As you all noted, it's been acknowledged and discussed by mods and Dr. J.
The @name feature might be on a future update, but nothing is in the works.
An explanation of why commenting to comments on songs is as it is, can be found in the help section/FAQ.
A secondary issue with commenting to comments is that it creates an unwanted domino effect in the comment list itself. This would make things appear very clunky. Ya gotta remember icomps was built and had all it's features, bells and whistles added over 10 years. Ibandstand *isn't* icomps and isn't intended to be a clone of icomps. Plus iBandstand is just over a 6 month launch with one person doing all the coding while holding a full time job.
I know you're all disappointed, but that's where we are right now. You're all encouraged to msg people via the built in msg feature.
Dr. J may add his own comments down the road.
i feel that commenting on comments is a vital feature to provide for people to interact well. with a comment to a comment, the context is obvious, and it allows a small chain of interactions to occur easily and naturally without having to explain which comment you are talking about.
i think of it like being at a party. people dynamically break up into little groups to discuss things, others join in, some move along. dozens of these little groups come and go as the party continues. some folks call this "networking" - it's important in human communication.
Yes... What Bill said!
Hopefully, further modifications can be made down the line.
I for one not only enjoy publically interacting with other artists via commenting, I also appreciate reading what others have to say. It helps me to get to know other members. To me, the ability to respond to a comment is a form of community building and should be pursued (even if it takes awhile to get to that place).
Be well all!
This is also a feature I would like to see.
At the moment I receive almost daily private messages from people saying thank you for my feedback. I can live with that and appreciate the thank you's but it is not optimal.
More important is that I know if people give me constructive feedback in a comment - which I welcome very much - and I answer - people will never see my reply and we can never initiave any community dialog on a song. I am not sure if the @tag is the best solution or a reply to a posting is best.
The @tag has the advantage that you can tag many in one post. That is also the disadvantage. I think the best thank-you you can give is to take 5 minutes to listen to the commenters music instead of thanking and thanking.
A feature where a reply to a posting (small reply button in the posting table row) becomes a posting like any other but with the extra feature that the person you reply to gets notified would be a good solution. It will not mess up the entire site with indented discussions. After all it is just comments to a song. And it will encourage us to listen to other members music instead of spending time on thank yous. I know it feels right to say thank you. But we all know how wonderful we feel when a fellow musician says "I like this song" in a message. It is the energy that makes me want to make and share even more music.
I too would like to 'reply on comments', but seeing it as a 'tree', but just posting a comment, who would I be replying to? So, by the use of @ it would trigger a notification for that user being mentioned, and clicking that link in his/her email would go straight to the post where that user was mentioned, but as it stands now, nobody is the wiser if any replies to any comments has been posted, and if there was, then it could be well overlooked for months, unless that use just happens to stumble across the post with a reply that was posted months ago. So yeah, a reply tree structure with notifications would work, just look at Discord, when someone mentions you using @, you get an email with something like "blah blah blah has mentioned you in a post your following" click this link to see the reply.
Currently here on iBandstand, how would I know if someone has posted a reply to any of my posts?
Some people would say to use the messaging system, wouldn't that defeat the object of publicly being involved in public discussions?
The only way a member knows when someone has posted anything is the notifications on the 'Messages' tab which indicates any private messages. So, it seems if you want anyone to get notified of any messages, then don't use the forums, just send every member a DM, they'll get the notification, they reply, you get a notification, rinse and repeat, or when you login, there could be a 'Member notifications' box between the 'Search iBandstand' and the 'chatbox' that only members can see and relates only to individual members, and it shows something like "A reply has been posted on ", and the 'post name' would be a link showing just a few words of that post, which is then clicked and goes straight to that post.
