Song information
The dating of the Sphinx is a matter of intense controversy. Evidence of very ancient water erosion, as well
as astronomical considerations, place the traditional dating
in serious doubt. (IMHO there’s more CULT than there is science in “orthodox” Egyptology…)

I was doing a bit of “archaeology” myself the other day, going through old music files and trying to get them organized. In the process I stumbled upon this song that—if memory serves—I recorded back in 2010. I had completely forgotten about it.

The original file stems were lost when my old Mac G-5 crashed in late 2011. I have tried to clean it up some via EQ-ing.

Btw, that violin in the middle section is actually my electric guitar run through a device that converted it to Midi. This enabled me to use synth violin for the “voice” on my slide leads.

The live drums are courtesy of the quick-and-nimble Andy Mackle.

My reason for posting this song has to do with a certain apprehensiveness I have with regard to 2024.

There are simply too many people in this country—-both Left wing and Right wing—holding extreme socio-political positions.

Such POLARIZATION is obviously a recipe for disaster (but what does that matter, when one believes oneself to be absolutely right and just?).

Whenever love and understanding go by the wayside, yet another bloodletting commences…

Will humanity ever learn?

The Sphinx watches and waits…

Lyrics
SPHINX

I
Proud and aloof on the desert floor;
for 50,000 years, maybe more;
a sign for all who seek out
the riddle of our being,
and the origin of our wandering souls.

II
Empires rise and fall back into dust.
The artifacts of our tenancy
decay, and they rust.
Well the Sphinx he sees it all
…his vision so powerful;
perceiving the seed concealed within the husk.

BRIDGE:
He gazes from the still point of the Real;
as we ride the downward arc of karma’s wheel.
Well we’re reaping what we’ve sown;
ground under the weight of our own heels!
How does it feel?

III
His expression so serene and yet so stern.
Well the world, it cracks and crumbles like a broken urn.
The denizens of death destroy
the few shards that are left;
in the leveling
for which their blind hearts yearn.

IV
In the deep and silent stillness, comes his call…
His voice, it echoes down time’s hoary halls.
My body they may burn,
but my soul it will live on,
until to this bloody sphere I do return!
He stands proud against the sky,
with a twinkle in his eye;
he watches and he waits
for us to learn…

How many more of these you got in that vault? The funny thing to me is you forget you have made them. Shine ‘um up and here we go! Your ears are way better too! I enjoyed this piece. I can’t wait to see what is coming next.

This was majestic.. that's the definition that comes to mind as I listen.. Your vocals are commanding and the arrangement so 'visual' Joyce

This is what I call a thinking song. I share your concerns. Reminds me of some of the folk rock tunes that protested the Vietnam war in the 60’s and early 70’s.

Thanks Daug... Far as I know this is the only one I ever forgot. Weird since I wrote two other thematically similar tunes around the same time but didn't forget them! Joyce: Thanks for the kind comment. "Majestic" and "visual" eh? Darn! Now I won't be able to get my head through the door... 😋😜 Fisherman, Yeah, I lived through that time too. Left quite the imprint on my consciousness I'm afraid! Thanks so much for listening and commenting friend.

You're right about 2024, war in Ukraine, war in Palestine, climate changes, ..., this is not reassuring. The lyrics are so poetic, It's not often that I listen to a song until the end.

Hi Thierry, Like you, I wish it were otherwise, but the world is as it is. Nevertheless, I refuse to give up hope. So glad you gave this one a listen. Be well friend!

Kenneth, Mary, and Omar: Thanks so much for giving this a listen. Hope my apprehension re 2024 turn out wrong, and it turns out to be a year of understanding, compromise, and mutual respect. However, there are a lot of folk out there who simply will not have it so. May their designs fail miserably, for everyone's sake. Be well my friends!

Epic ! I really love how you mix celtic, rock, 70's folk elements into your own world. Reminds me, in the best way possible, of Wovenhand and David Eugene Edward songs. Strong and legit. Bravo.

Dee: Thanks for your "Wow." Succinct and appreciated. 😘 Todd: Good to find you on site man. Have always dug your guitar slinging, and appreciate your kind words of support. Dyl: Thanks friend. There's decades of folk, folk-rock, celtic-rock, classic-rock, and prog-rock floating about in this head of mine. Every now and again the stuff leaks out into my own music... 😋 Be well friends!

Epic! Mike, massively cool song. The music bed tapestry alone captures the ear. Add your lyrics of lament and it's an online rock classic. Kudos!

Thanks Jack! Glad you enjoyed this! My memory sucks. I finally remembered the song, but until just now I also forgot that Scott Fugate did the drums and percussion. He showed great restraint in the quiet sections and acquitted himself marvelously and with artistic flair in the heavier mid-section. A shout out to Scott wherever you are!

One wonders... did Mike set out to write a prog rock epic... or a dissertation for his Doctorate Degree in Philosophy.. either way I think you've been successful.. great subtle touches all though... your vocal really captures the angst of working it out with fear and trembling

Scott: Thanks for clocking in on this one bro. No Doctoral Dissertation here. The poetry was evoked by the music. (Which is usually the case with me...) Gian: I rock? God knows I TRY... Ha ha... Thanks for listening my friend!

You are too kind Mark. Recorded this just before my 2011 Mac crashed, when I was finally getting the hang of mixing/mastering. Several others recorded around the same time, and only recently remastered, will be posted later this year. Be well friend!

This was awesome... moody and magnificent. The violin was delightfully plaintive.

Thank you John... As per the "liner notes," that violin is actually my slide guitar riffing run through a midi converter and given a violin "voice." Thanks so much for listening and commenting. Be well friend!
