Song information
I wrote this after having my beautiful Maton FG150 12-string brought back to life by Simon the Guitar Man in Bermagui. They say that getting a new instrument (in this case getting an old instrument back in playable condition) is an inspiration to write, and that was certainly the case with this song.
While this is technically a solo effort, it wouldn't have ended up with quite the same polish without Joe Cannon's reflection, suggestions and great ears.
About the joys of septugenerianism.
It's getting later than you think!

Lyrics
A Little Bit Older
©2022 Neil Porter

V1
We’re a little bit older now
Just a little bit more resistant
We’re feeling less like we’ve been lost at sea
We’re a little bit bolder now
Just a little bit more persistent
We’re feeling more like where we want to be

Ch
She’s alone with her piano
He’s become a setting sun
Looking out the winter window
We are not the only ones

V3
We’re a little bit worse for wear
Just a little bit less consistent
We’re maybe getting closer to the tee
We’re a little bit out of breath
Might need a bit more assistance
This is the way that things are gonna be

Ch
She’s alone with her piano
He’s become a setting sun
Looking out the winter window
We are not the only ones

BRIDGE

V4
We were just so unprepared
Feeling inconsequential
But we are mostly where we want to be
We’re a little bit overdressed
Stay a little bit under cover
We’re feeling less like we’ve been lost at sea

Ch
She’s alone with her piano
He’s become a setting sun
Looking out the winter window
We are not the only ones

Can’t help but catch a Steven Stills vibe here… the way your meter and cadence falls in unexpected places… the effect keeps the listener off balance (in a good way) and it strengthens the atmosphere of uncertainty that ultimately must visit us all… strong stuff Neil… strong

I couldn't suggest anything along any lines to improve this neat tune. Sometimes it's what we leave out which makes the tune stand out lyric wise.. it's like the articles of speech are left out which is perfect because people use too many "the", " and " , "a "..." plurals" when they write lyrics... and sometimes these things are distracting. And the vocals here are gentle and mellow and nice. The meter of the lyrics is just concise enough to bring Avid points across and have them stick Within one's brain.

Maybe we're getting a little wiser as well. I don't necessarily include myself in that category... Lovely and heartfelt. Love it!

I am so honored to share the same musical site with such talented folks. This song is superbly crafted and performed. An interesting chord progression that does not tire, instead it invokes further introspection. Beautiful. Mike

Beautiful song, Neil. I love the subtle approach (both the music and the lyrics...) and the fact that your mix is not Too Loud (hehe). Acoustics are splendid here.

A fine meditation on the ongoing slip-sliding aging process. I can relate to what you say about instrument inspiration. A neighbor loaned me his 90s Stratocaster for two weeks this summer while he left on holiday and I cranked out new songs every day. It was magical : )

Hey, Neil. Great to hear your music again. I really like this stripped back song. The 12-string Maton sounds really good and I like the chord progressions. Lyrics are relevant to most of us I think. Lovely work. Take care.

Hah... You and me both Neil. Who knew life at 70 could be so good! I for one am loving it. A fine tune that captures many of the nuances that are part and parcel of the "golden years."
