Desafinado (a Portuguese word, usually rendered into English as "Out of Tune", or as "Off Key") is a 1959 bossa nova song and jazz standard composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim. Desafinado was originally a response to critics who claimed that the bossa nova genre was created for singers who can't sing. Jazz Guitarist Charlie Byrd discovered the song while in Brazil and suggested to Stan Getz to record the album Jazz Samba (1962) including Desafinado and other Brazilian songs. This started the Bossa Nova craze in the USA. Stan Getz won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance of 1963 for Desafinado. Desafinado was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, while Jazz Samba was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. I was blown away when I heard Getz play on Jazz Samba, especially Desafinado. I simply never heard such a beautiful “Sound” and his unique tenor sax technique. I play 0:15-2:23 and 4:32-6:48. There is open solo space from 2:23-4:32 in the key of F Concert which is the standard in Jazz. The original key composed by Antonio Carlos Jobin was E Major Concert.
